Distinguished actor John Gielgud appeared in 122 films and television programs over his career, including appearing as the Pope in Elizabeth at the age of 94 and in Catastrophe at the age of 96, the year he died. During his career he earned an Academy Award nomination for Becket, the Oscar for Arthur, and numerous other nominations and awards.
In 1953, John Gielgud was convicted of "lewd behavior" for same-sex conduct. At his next theatrical performance he received a standing ovation from the audience, which began the movement in Britain to decriminalize homosexual behavior. He was knighted the same year.
He received Hall of Fame Cosmo nominations at both the second and the fifth Annual Awards.
