2004 Cosmique Movie Awards
In order to resolve his confusion over a recurring coincidence, Albert (Jason Schwartzman) hires a husband-and-wife team of existential detectives (Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin) to spy on his every action. At the Cosmos, the film earned two nominations, including Best Comedy and a surprise Supporting Actress nomination for Naomi Watts.
When a film markets itself with the tagline "an existential comedy," you know you aren't in for a standard movie. Some will genuinely find this film to be tedious, pretentious, and unfunny. Others (like me) will find it to be a wickedly clever and innovative satire (it will almost certainly make my top five list for one of the best comedies of the year, and for writing as well).
It's one of those films that's impossible to describe, however. You'll just have to see it for yourself - you'll either love it, or you'll hate it. (How's that for a recommendation?)
My Rating: 8
