In 1968 Paris, a young American film buff, Matthew (Michael Pitt), befriends two twins, Isabelle and Theo (Eva Green and Louis Garrel). While Isabelle and Theo's parents are away on holiday, the three form a bond that is intense, erotic, and disturbing.
Bernardo Bertolucci's latest film is rated NC-17 for nudity (including lengthy exposures of full-frontal male and female nudity) and frank depiction of sexuality (including incestuous situations). Some will find it very disturbing. But the film is also a highly-charged character study, and intensely erotic for all of its troubling images.
A full review would be too challenging to do without revealing more than I should. I did find the technique of cutting away to show scenes from other classic films to be clever and useful, even though this approach can often be annoying.
My Rating: 8
